OR Tambo has more parking capacity than any other South African airport — approximately 11,500 public parking bays spread across multiple parkades and open-air lots within the airport precinct, all managed by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA). With that scale comes more choice, but also more potential to overpay if you pick the wrong option for your trip length.

How OR Tambo Parking Works

Parking at OR Tambo currently operates on a first-come, first-served basis — you take a ticket on entry and pay on exit, either in cash or by card at the automated pay stations. As of now, ACSA does not offer pre-booking directly on its own site for standard parkades, though third-party booking services exist offering potential savings on certain options, including off-site and valet/meet-and-greet parking. As with any published parking rate, tariffs change periodically — always confirm current pricing on the ACSA website or at the parking entrance before you travel, rather than relying solely on numbers published online.

The basic rule that governs everything: the further you park from the terminal, the more you save. OR Tambo’s pricing structure rewards travellers willing to walk a little further or take a short shuttle from a more distant lot.

Pickup and Drop-Off Parking

Dedicated pickup and drop-off parking is available outside the international terminal building, with the first 20 minutes free — Parkade 2 (P2) Level 0/South Level 2 is the area specifically designated for this. This is sufficient for most quick pickups. Vehicles left unattended in these zones beyond the grace period risk being impounded, with a removal/release fee applied — these zones are not intended for extended waiting.

Short-Stay Parking

Short-stay parking suits travellers parking for a few hours around a flight — for a drop-off with a wait, or collecting a delayed arrival. Short-stay rates are charged per hour after any grace period, with the rate roughly in the region of R30–R60 per hour depending on the specific parkade and current tariff — confirm the live rate at the entry boom, since this is one of the figures most likely to have changed since publication.

Long-Stay Parking

For travellers leaving a vehicle for several days – a common need at an airport handling this much international and long-haul traffic – long-stay parkades offer a considerably cheaper daily rate than short-stay. This is the parking type most worth comparing closely before you commit, since the difference between parkades can be significant over a week or two-week trip.

Off-Site and Valet (Meet and Greet) Parking

Independent off-site parking operators serve OR Tambo with valet (meet and greet) parking — you drive to the terminal, hand your keys to a specialist driver, and they park your car off-site; on your return, your car is brought back to you at the terminal, with no transfer required. Per ACSA’s own rules, valet parking companies are only permitted to operate within the parkade area of the airport. Off-site and valet options are frequently advertised as cheaper than on-site ACSA rates for longer stays, and most offer additional touches like a complimentary vehicle wash. If you’re parking for a week or more, it’s worth comparing an off-site valet quote against the standard ACSA long-stay rate.

Lost Tickets

A lost ticket incurs the applicable penalty tariff in addition to any parking costs already accrued — keep your ticket safe throughout your stay.

Should You Even Drive and Park at OR Tambo?

Given OR Tambo’s Gautrain connection, this is genuinely worth considering before you default to driving. If your destination is along the Gautrain corridor — Sandton, Rosebank, Johannesburg CBD, Midrand, Centurion or Pretoria — the train may be faster, cheaper and less stressful than driving yourself, particularly for shorter trips where the parking cost would otherwise add up. See our full Gautrain and transfers comparison for a side-by-side breakdown.
